This year marks the 30th anniversary of the first newspaper article mentioning what we now know as HIV. It also marks the 30th anniversary of the Center for Disease Control’s first reports on AIDS-related illnesses. To us, this is a solemn reminder of how far we have come in the fight against HIV. Thirty years ago, an HIV diagnosis was a certain death sentence. Today, there are many medicines available which can help those living with HIV to manage their disease.
Dr. Schwartz, in association with several drug companies, participated in some of the earliest drug trials available to HIV patients. His commitment to bettering the lives of those living with HIV enabled many of our patients to receive life-saving medications at a time when few people had hope for the future. Though we no longer participate in research, we still empower our patients to lead healthy lives with regular checkups and a food pantry that helps meet some of their needs outside the doctor’s office. In addition to providing care for those affected by HIV we also reach out to our community by offering free HIV testing on a walk-in or appointment basis.
We work with both the Harry Chapin Food Bank and Wake Up America to provide fresh meats, produce, bread and canned goods to our patients; our food pantry is also open to the community.
We depend on the generosity of community members such as you to support these valuable programs. Please consider a tax-deductible donation to our organization. Our tax-exempt ID number is 46-07-083600-85C and our federal tax-exempt ID number is 65-0581985. You can also make a donation to Harry Chapin Food Bank in our name – if you choose to do this, please include “For Center for Living 55267” in the reference field of your check. Your donation will enable us to provide life-saving care.
